Application Letter: Definition and Purposes

Sobat pintar, setelah lulus sekolah nanti mungkin ada yang ingin langsung melamar pekerjaan.

Di bab ini kita akan belajar bersama mengenai application letter.

Application letter atau juga dikenal sebagai cover letter bermakna surat lamaran kerja. Dalam penulisannya lebih baik memerhatikan beberapa hal yang disyaratkan oleh perusahaan, salah satunya adalah melampirkan surat lamaran pekerjaan dalam bahasa Inggris.

Kita dapat mengetahui harus menuliskan application letter dalam bahasa Inggris, jika sudah mendapatkan informasi lowongan pekerjaan atau job vacancy yang ada, bukan? Sobat Pintar tahu gak sih dimana saja kita mendapatkannya?

Di bawah ini contoh-contoh sumber informasi lowongan pekerjaan.

  1. Website Perusahaan yang dituju, seperti Telkom, beberapa BUMN lainnya, dsb.

Tapi, Sobat paham gak nih, tujuan kita menulis sebuah surat lamaran pekerjaan?

Surat Lamaran atau dalam bahasa inggris application letter memiliki beberapa tujuan:

  1. Untuk menyajikan kemampuan yang kita punya sebidang dengan posisi yang dilamar (to present the skills that we have that are relevant to the position applied for).
  2. Memberikan kesempatan kepada kita untuk menjelaskan mengapa kita tertarik dengan posisi tersebut (to give us the opportunity to explain why we are interested in the position).
  3. Memberikan gambaran bagaimana prospektif karir kita sebagai Karyawan atau Pegawai kedepannya (to provide an overview of how prospective our careers as employees or officials in the future).

Namun, sebelum tahap pembuatan application letter, kita lebih baik memeriksa dulu lowongan pekerjaan apa aja sih yang tersedia.

Structure of Job Application Letter

Untuk menulis alamat yang akan dituju harus jelas, agar pihak pengirim tidak salah alamat perusahaan yang dituju.

Always make an effort to write directly to the person in charge of hiring
Dalam mengirim surat lamaran seharusnya langsung ditujukan ke orang atau pihak yang dituju.

Opening paragraph
Di dalam paragraf pembuka dapat disebutkan secara spesifik pekerjaan atau jabatan yang dituju atau juga menanyakan informasi perihal jabatan atau posisi yang dibuka.

Middle Paragraph / Body
Di bagian ini harus menjelaskan pengalaman kerja yang sesuai dengan posisi yang dibutuhkan atau dilamar. Tidak perlu mengulang kembali informasi yang sudah disertakan dalam resume/curriculum vitae yang sudah kamu lampirkan. Kita cukup memberikan alasan kuat mengapa kita layak mengisi posisi tersebut.

Closing signature 
Di bagian ini dapat menanyakan kemungkinan jadwal interview dan juga sertakan nomor yang dapat dihubungi serta alamat email yang aktif, sehingga HRD atau petugas yang bertanggung jawab dapat menghubungi dengan mudah.

Curriculum Vitae atau sering disingkat sebagai CV sebenarnya memiliki makna cerita kehidupan yang berasal dari bahasa Latin.

Kalau dilihat dari makna tersebut, bisa mulai kita tebak nih. Jadi, CV adalah dokumen yang akan ditulis secara rinci perihal keseluruhan perjalanan atau pengalaman yang dimiliki oleh pelamar kerja.

Definition of Curriculum Vitae

According to Cambridge Dictionary, curriculum vitae is a short written description of your education, qualifications, previous jobs, and sometimes also your personal interests, which you send to an employer when you are trying to get a job. 

Menurut Cambridge Dictionary, curriculum vitae adalah sebuah deskripsi singkat tentang pendidikan, kualifikasi, pekerjaan sebelumnya, dan terkadang juga minat pribadimu, yang kamu kirimkan ke pemberi pekerjaan saat kamu mencoba untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan.

CV adalah dokumen yang lebih komprehensif dan terperinci yang menjelaskan tentang latar belakang pendidikan dan pengalaman kerja atau karir profesional yang Sobat Pintar miliki. CV tidak memiliki batas tertentu terkait jumlah halaman. Namun, biasanya CV terdiri dari 3 sampai 10 halaman. Semakin banyak pengalaman dan keterampilan yang kamu miliki, maka CV kamu akan semakin panjang.

Berikut ini adalah tiga jenis format CV:

  • Chronological CV: Jenis ini adalah yang paling sering kita jumpai. Daftar riwayat pekerjaan ditulis dari yang terbaru. CV ini biasanya digunakan jika kamu ingin menonjolkan kemampuan yang kamu miliki dalam menyelesaikan suatu proyek dan tentu saja kamu sudah memiliki pengalaman kerja sebelumnya.
  • Functional CV atau yang biasa juga dikenal dengan skill-based CV, biasanya format ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan pengalaman kerja dan keterampilan yang kamu miliki. Format ini biasanya digunakan jika kamu memiliki jeda dalam berkarir, belum memiliki pengalaman kerja sebelumnya dan memiliki keinginan untuk beralih jenis pekerjaan.
  • Combination CV: Jenis CV ini merupakan gabungan antara chronological CV dan functional CV. Dengan menggunakan format ini, kamu dapat memfokuskan CV kamu dengan menunjukkan skill dan riwayat pengalaman kerja secara yang kamu miliki runtut.

  1. Pahami informasi apa saja yang bisa dimasukkan dan bagaimana mengatur informasi-informasi tersebut.
  2. Pilihlah jenis format cv yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan kamu. Format penulisan cv perlu disesuaikan dengan pengalaman kerja, keterampilan, dan posisi yang dilamar. Jika Sobat Pintar ingin melamar beasiswa (misalnya), maka kamu harus menyesuaikan dengan format cv internasional yang mana tidak mencantumkan informasi pribadi.

Di bagian ini biasa dituliskan urutan pendidikan yang sedang atau telah ditempuh. Pada umumnya, yang dituliskan, yaitu jenjang, periode studi, nama jurusan, nama sekolah atau universitas, nilai akhir yang didapatkan saat lulus.

Resume is a written statement of your educational and work experience. Resume adalah sebuah pernyataan tertulis tentang pendidikan dan pengalaman kerjamu.

Resume biasanya dikirimkan dengan Job Application Letter (JAL) atau yang biasa juga dikenal dengan cover letter. Untuk Resume, dalam pembuatannya memiliki poin-poin yang serupa dengan CV, akan tetapi cara penulisan dan layout dalam dokumen yang sedikit berbeda.

Resume sendiri cenderung lebih singkat, sehingga perekrut dengan mudah mendapatkan informasi tentang calon karyawan hanya kurang dari 2 halaman dokumen.

Dalam Resume, biasanya cenderung menunjukkan kemampuan yang paling menonjol dan juga lebih spesifik berhubungan dengan pekerjaan atau posisi yang dilamar.

Tujuan resume

Tujuan dari resume adalah untuk mengenalkan tentang diri kamu dan kualifikasi yang kamu miliki sehingga ketika proses wawancara nanti kamu bisa menjelaskan dengan lebih detail dan terstruktur mengenai pengalaman kerja yang relevan dengan posisi yang dilamar.

Berikut ini adalah format penulisan resume yang baik 

  1. Atur jarak spasi 1 atau 1.15 
  2. Atur batas tepi kanan-kiri sepanjang 1 inci dan rata kanan-kiri (justify)
  3. Gunakan font yang dapat dibaca dengan ukuran font 11 atau 12 pt.
  4. Kelompokkan setiap sub menu dalam resume agar mudah dibaca
  5. Jangan lupa letakkan informasi kontak yang dapat dihubungi dalam header resume yang terpisah 
  6. Deskripsikan pengalamanmu dalam bentuk poin-poin
  7. Untuk membuat tata letak resume seimbang, sisakan ruang kosong yang cukup. Ini juga akan membuat resume kamu terlihat rapi.

Hal-hal yang harus disertakan dalam resume:

1. Latar belakang pendidikan: Nama almamater/sekolah dimana kamu menempuh pendidikan terakhir, jurusan, gelar. Selain itu, Sobat Pintar dapat juga mencantumkan IPK dan sertifikat dari kursus/keterampilan yang relevan dengan posisi yang dilamar.

2. Pengalaman kerja: cantumkan pengalaman kerja yang relevan dengan posisi yang dilamar. Tulis identitas perusahaan sebelumnya dengan jelas dan jelaskan secara singkat tugas atau pekerjaan yang dilakukan ketika bekerja di sana. Sobat Pintar juga perlu menuliskan periode waktu berapa lama telah bekerja di sana.
