2022 Travel Trend; Tourists Turn to Nature-based Tourism, Road Trip

Translator: Dewi Elvia Muthiariny

Editor: Petir Garda Bhwana

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) predicted that nature-based or outdoor tourism will still become a travel trend in 2022 as tourists do not only seek travel experience but also wellness trips amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People will look for different locations and experiences through outdoor travel experiences,” said PHRI Human Resources Training Chair Alexander Nayoan on Tuesday, November 30.

According to Alexander, tourists will still enjoy sites that provide fresh air and get a healthy and safe experience. In addition, they still tend to choose to travel in small groups consisting of their inner circles.

Many tourists also prefer to schedule their own travel plans, including booking accommodation and tickets through online travel agencies. “So companies that are able to develop today are those that have adapted in the digital era,” Alexander opined.

He also estimated there will be an increase in the number of people traveling between cities or between provinces by road due to better infrastructure. This, he added, would bring good impacts on the economy.

Unfortunately, Alexander said foreign tourist visits could not be expected to boost the country’s tourism. If the situation is safe, tourists from Australia are forecasted to start coming in mid-2022 in line with the local school holidays. Meanwhile, tourists from China may arrive later as the country is still considering various aspects of safe travel. “This all surely depends on regulations of the respective country governments,” he concluded.

Australia winces at footage of child falling between train and platform

Sydney - Australia released hair-raising security images on Tuesday of a child falling between a train station platform and a train, as a reminder to parents to stay vigilant during the busy school holidays.

A train stops at a Sydney station, and a woman pushes a stroller toward the open doors, in the closed-circuit television pictures. As she prepares to lift the stroller onto the train, the child walking beside her plunges into the gap between the woman and the train. The woman then raises her arm to draw the attention of station staff, while passersby pull the apparently unharmed child back onto the platform.

"A simple thing such as holding your child's hand when moving around stations and boarding a train can help prevent them from being seriously injured or worse," Andrew Constance, the transport minister of New South Wales, said in a statement.

The clip was widely shared on social media, with a post by Nine Entertainment Co Holdings Ltd's drawing 1,600 comments and 1,100 "shares".

More than half of train station accidents on the 178-station Sydney Trains network take place at the three busiest stations in the city's central business district, Chief Executive Howard Collins said.

"The most important message I'd like to share with parents is please don't rush around stations or platforms," he added.

27 December 2021 08:17 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta City Government was set to block access to a number of places that potentially be crowded by the public on New Year's Eve 2022.

The city’s COVID-19 task force chairman Heroe Poerwadi said that based on the evaluation, the places include the zero kilometer point of Yogyakarta, both in front of the Vredeburg Fort and the State Palace, as well as the South and North Squares. “Those places will be fenced so that no tourists can come and hang out there,” said Heroe on Sunday, December 26.

He explained, although there were no events at the areas, these spots are usually used as a gathering point for various purposes. The installation of fences at the end of Malioboro Street and the square, he added, was also aimed at maintaining the sloping COVID-19 trend.

Yogyakarta Transportation Agency Head Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti said 21,628 motorcycles and 9,528 cars entered the area on Friday, December 24. The number dropped a day after to 19,362 motorcycles and 7,741 cars.

“The peak of community mobility during the Christmas and New Year holidays occurred last Friday night,” he added.

Yogyakarta City Police Chief Commissioner Purwadi said 1,119 officers were on standby at a number of security posts during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Other than monitoring the traffic, they would oversee the implementation of health protocols against COVID-19.

14 January 2022 18:32 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maya Watono, Marketing Director of InJourney, said that the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company has been provided with a target to increase the number of domestic and international tourists. The Holding company must be able to record 330 million of domestic tourists and 17 million international tourists, a number which is equal to the period before the Covid-19 pandemic hits.

"In addition, we are also targeted to be able to improve the tourism sector to give a 4.5 percent contribution to the GDP [Gross Domestic Product]. That is a massive effort because during the pandemic, the[tourism] sector only contributes under 4 percent of the GDP," Maya said in an online press conference on Friday, January 14, 2022.

Maya explained that to achieve the target, the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company has prepared a strategy. The long-term strategy is to create clusters under the holding company supervision integrated in a single ecosystem. The clusters under the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company includes the aviation, tourism, hotel, and retail sectors.

Maya asserted that several matters that must be synergized are transportation availability, logistic flow, and availability of accommodation for tourism. She believed that if the tourism can be integrated, the goal to increase numbers of domestic and international tourists can be achieved.

Meanwhile, for the short-term strategy, the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company has created a 100 days calendar of event. The calendar of event will serve as a reference for activities within a certain year that will be held at high-priority destinations to increase tourist number.

"The closest one is MotoGP. MotoGP will be the exercise," Maya said.

Further, the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company will create a timeline to achieve specific targets in each cluster. Maya hoped that the creation of the Tourism Holding company can help to accelerate economic recovery in the tourism sector, aviation sector, and creative economy sector.

"We hoped the Covid-19 conditon can get better. Because if it is not, it will present a challenge," Maya said.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo officially inaugurated InJourney, which is the name of the State-Owned Enterprises Tourism Holding company. The holding is led by PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia, an earlier stage holding company established in October 2021 consisting of six state-owned company, namely: PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero), PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), PT Hotel Indonesia Natour (Persero), PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko (Persero), and PT Sarinah (Persero).

"We need to take advantage of the condition as a turning point to do a leap, momentum to reorganize, momentum to transform, to construct a stronger and more resilient ecosystem," Jokowi said in a written statement on Thursday, January 13, 2022.
